Library overview for term 4 2009
Prep
– Focus on Non fiction text.
Non fiction text are true. They have FACTS
Non fiction text have special format –contents and index.
Fiction text will be used for enjoyment, literature responses.
Skills –books must be returned and borrowed via the computer.
Picture Story books are shelved by the first initial of the author’s name.
Students read books independently when work is completed and others are borrowing.
Grades 1 & 2
Focus Non fiction books.
Non fiction books are facts, no imagination or personal feelings.
Non fiction books have a specific format –contents, index, glossary, headings.
Children explain why specific books are fiction or non-fiction.
Fiction text will be used for enjoyment.
Skills- (Grade 2 have access to all books/ Grade 1 have access to non-fiction and picture story books.)
Students learn to use shelf markers when browsing to assist in returning books to the correct location.
Fiction books are shelved using the first three letters of authors’ surnames.
Non fiction books are shelved using numbers and letters.
Grade 3 & 4
Focus Non fiction books and Dewey system
Non fiction books are shelved according to categories. 100s are larger areas with subgroups within each 100.
Children develop greater awareness of the different categories of non-fiction books.
Call numbers for categories are identical in all libraries.
Introduce REFERENCE SECTION –non borrowing in all libraries, but BROWSING allowed
Fiction books will be used for enjoyment.
Skills – Using the computer to identify call numbers of non-fiction categories.
Students becoming familiar with favourite categories.
Students use the call numbers to locate books.
Grades 5 & 6
Focus –Language enrichment and enjoyment. Interpreting ideas and developing imagery.
Students examine words and expressions and their meanings.- focus on Shakespeare.
Students perform a scene from Macbeth. Grade 5 given modern version , Grade 6 traditional version.
Revisit reference section
Skills- Enjoyment of text and justifying responses to text with evidence.
Interpreting ideas from language provided.
