2009 Multicultural Studies—Yearly Overview

Term 2 – Koori  To develop a greater understanding of our  indigenous community and their influences on our way of life.

Term 4  -  Christmas and Celebrations around the world.

These studies will include Geography, some language and it’s structure where possible, the food, festivals and some contributions that they have made to our “Australian” way of life.

The Curriculum has been developed to cater for a wide range of needs, abilities and interests in a cooperative and stimulating learning environment that incorporates a flexible and diverse approach to teaching and learning.

To support our focus on the curriculum all staff meet once per week to learn about and discuss the Principles of Learning and Teaching.

Specialist classes are conducted in Physical Education, Visual Art, Music, Cultural Studies and Library. Special assistance is provided for Integration students through the appointment of Integration aides. As well as encouraging participation in GATEWAYS we have an Extension program for students in Grades 3 - 6 in English and Maths. To actively support these key-learning areas, a wide range of enrichment programs are provided:

Physical Education

We have an exciting Physical Education program that offers a range of activities and events. The school is actively involved in many sports on different levels. These include athletics, cross country, interschool sports and swimming. As well as an outstanding Physical Education program our senior students compete in interschool sports. Students who do well are encouraged to attend district and zone events. The school has a proud history of sporting achievments.

Information & Communications Technology

With a well-resourced computer classroom, and interactive whiteboards and classroom access to information technology, our Learning Technologies program enables students to experience, discuss, reflect upon and practise new learning approaches. Students have regular access to the use of multimedia equipment. In recent years, Information and Communication Technology has become a proud feature of the school. Each classroom has a computer hub and we also have a computer room. The school has made a committment to develop digital portfolios over the next four years.

Visual Arts & Performing Choir

The Visual and Performing Arts program and the Performing Choir foster self-esteem, confidence, creativity and independence through visual art, dance, drama and music components. There are two Performance Assemblies per term. Children who play an instrument and the choir perform. Other groups may also perform. In 2008 our Choir participated in the State School Spectacular. Programs are designed to encourage all children to grow in confidence and experience. In addition to this, private tuition is available for students in brass, woodwind, piano, keyboard and percussion during school hours. The school has a small band, which plays regularly at assemblies. Performance is viewed as an integral component of these programs.

Science

Participation in the Science In Schools Research Project has added a great deal of student and community interest in the teaching and learning of Science. Clearly, it has provided a stimulus for student learning in Science.
