Wellbeing

At Belle Vue Primary School we know that our students thrive in spaces that promote consistent predictable routines. We recognise our curriculum should enhance and support our students’ wellbeing and learning and these two pillars should work together. As a staff we devote our time to understanding the research and evidence on how to best work with students who present with unmet learning needs in the classroom and responding with a multi-tiered system of support. We always aim to be proactive and pre-emptive in our approach to supporting student wellbeing. Being proactive means setting up whole school routines, strategies and environments that give students the best chance of success. Being Pre-emptive means detecting when students show early signs of distress or dysregulation and supporting students to reach out for support.

Respectful Relationships Curriculum

The Royal Commission into Family Violence recommended all Victorian government schools implement the Respectful Relationships whole-school approach, which supports school leaders, educators and school communities to promote and model respect and equality.

The Respectful Relationships program supports schools and early childhood settings to promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours. It teaches our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence.

Belle Vue Primary School aims to bring about a cultural awareness and change in how we treat each other, which will have positive impacts on students’ academic outcomes, students mental health, classroom behaviour, and relationships with their teachers, peers, friends and family.

ZONES OF REGULATION

The Zones of Regulation is all about developing regulation skills and competencies. But what exactly is regulation and how does it impact our well-being. At Belle Vue we believe that it is important to show our students how regulation also helps them have more control over how they manage their feelings, energy, and behaviour.

BERRY STREET EDUCATION MODEL

To support us to build a schoolwide learning and wellbeing focused environment we have partnered with Berry Street to train our staff to implement the Berry Street Education Model. This evidence-based framework is a whole school approach to creating a safe and positive learning environment so that all students can learn in a calm and orderly classroom. Introducing and modelling routines is the first essential step in positive classroom management. Clear expectations support students’ self-regulation and reduce the decision fatigue and distractions that can occur without consistent, predictable routines. All teachers have taken the time to start the year by explicitly developing Class Entry Routines, End of Day Routines and Line-Up Routines to help create safe, calm and organised classrooms that are optimal for the learning of all students.

SCHOOL VALUES

At Belle Vue, our school values are integral to the culture of our school and learning spaces. We believe our values provide a foundation for the actions, decisions and behaviours for our students and for our community, by creating shared norms and expectations. Our values are reinforced and acknowledged everyday.
