Grade 3/4 students learned all about how trees absorb water through their roots. This water then travels through the tree and eventually passes through small holes in the leaves called stomata. The water then evaporates from the leaves.
To demonstrate this we carried out a simple experiment using sticks of celery (as our trees) and water with food colouring. As you can see from the photographs, transpiration made the leaves of the celery go blue!
We carried out this activity following a range of questions developed by the students about our current topic “Green Planet”. The students wanted to know:
Why do leaves have lines on them?
What do leaves do for trees?

Mobile Muster is coming to an end!
Our Mobile Muster has been a great success, thank you to all the families that have donated their unwanted mobile phones to the cause.
