Buddies Time with the Preps and Grade 5s
The Preps plant a kindness garden with their Grade 5 buddies!
In our buddy time today, the Preps were keen to share what they have been learning about kindness this term. To display this learning, each buddy team made a kindness flower.
On each petal the Preps and Grade 5s wrote an act of kindness. Some of these kind actions included:
- Pushing in people’s chair for them.
- Inviting someone to play who has no one to play with.
- Looking after your friends when they are hurt or sad.
- Helping someone clean up without them asking for help.
- Giving someone a compliment to make them feel nice.
After cutting and gluing each petal the buddy teams coloured and decorated their kindness flower. We look forward to seeing their beautiful work on display in the Prep classrooms.

Last week Prep W and Prep G students were lucky enough to have a visit from Coral and Morgan (Great Dane) from the Responsible Pet Ownership Education Program.
We learnt how to look after our pets and keep them safe by:
- getting them micro-chipped
- taking them to the Vet for yearly check-ups and vaccinations
- making sure they are wearing their collar with identification
- ensuring they have water every day
We also learnt to recognise:
- times when we should leave dogs alone
- the warning signs given by dogs
- how to safely approach and greet a dog
- what to do if we are approached by an aggressive dog
Some lucky students got to practice how to safely approach and greet a dog with Morgan the Great Dane. He was such a beautiful and gentle dog (and humongous!) They practiced asking the owner for a pat first, approaching the dog slowly with a closed fist and allowing it to smell them, then gently patting the dog’s side. All the student’s loved meeting Morgan!
Thank you again to Coral and Morgan from the Responsible Pet Ownership Program for coming in to visit us at Belle Vue!

In Prep, our Integrated topic for this term is ‘Weather in my World’.
This week the ‘Big Question’ we explored in Prep G was ‘how and why does it rain?’
We began by thinking about when after it rains and there’s puddles on the ground, where does the rain go? Does it just disappear? How?
We looked at the water cycle and learnt about how rain can evaporate into water vapor and go up to the sky to make clouds.
We looked at videos and discussed how clouds go a darker colour when it may rain soon! We learnt that it begins to rain, snow or hail when the water vapor gets too heavy in the clouds.
We then tested this idea with a ‘Rain Cloud in a Cup’ experiment! We created our rain clouds using shaving cream, and predicted how many rain drops (made up of food colour & water) we thought the cloud could hold before it ‘rained’. We then did a ‘write up’ of our experiment – drawing diagrams labelling the materials we used and explaining what we learnt from the experiment.
We had so much fun and are looking forward to more weather science experiments throughout the term!

In Prep G we have been learning about Multiplication! It has been very exciting learning this completely new concept for the students.
Students began exploring multiplication by creating equal groups using play dough.
They worked out their answer by creating their equal groups, then showed their working out through drawings.
We continued our practice using counters to make equal groups!
We then explored worded multiplication problems. Students created their own cookie posters, multiplying the number of cookies by the amount of M&M’s on each cookie.
We are excited to keep learning and practicing our multiplying skills!

On Monday some lucky Belle Vue Preps went to visit their old kindergarten!
We visited Bellevue kinder just down the road, and spoke to the 4 year old group about all the wonderful things we get up to at school.
We made a book for them to keep, to help them in their transition to school.
We loved seeing our old teachers and friends from kinder, and answering questions from the kids about what school is like.

This term our Prep students have been learning all about Animals throughout their integrated studies topic ‘Staying Alive’.
Throughout this topic we have been learning about:
-Living vs Non-Living Things
-Endangered and Extinct Animals
-Animal Habitats and Diets
-Classifying animals into Animal Groups including mammals, reptiles, fish, insects, amphibians and birds
-How we can help protect animal habitats
To celebrate our learning, on Friday we had Aussie Wildlife Displays come and run an incursion with us! We got to touch and learn about many different animals, including different pythons, lizards, a black cockatoo, a quoka, a wombat and even a baby crocodile!
We had a fantastic time! It was amazing to see all these animals – some of them being severely endangered!
Thank you Aussie Wildlife Displays for a fantastic Incursion!

This week we were very busy judging our stories for the Belle Vue Book Awards!
All the students worked very hard in Term 3, and wrote their very own picture story.
We went through the whole writing process:
- We made a plan for our story which included: characters, the setting, the problem, the solution and the WOW words we wanted to use
- We then began writing our stories
- We edited as we wrote
- We came up with a title and blurb
- Then we drew all the illustrations
After we finished our books, we all read each others amazing stories.
Then came the judging process! Here you can see some photos of us hard at work, making sure we scored each book fairly.
We judged the books on 4 criteria:
- Uses a variety of punctuation i.e. … !!! ?
- Does it have a clear beginning, middle and end?
- Does the story have lots of WOW words?
- Do the pictures match the words on the page?
Maybe the two students above didn’t agree when judging this book!
We worked in pairs, and got to review and judge 3 books. We weren’t allowed to judge our own book!
We scored the books out of 5 for each criteria, so the most a book could receive was 20/20!
We then used number lines to add up the scores. Ms Woodhouse took our score sheets and announced our two short listed books for the award ceremony on Monday.
We loved the whole Belle Vue Book Award process and we can’t wait to hear the winners, and listen to their stories!

Prep W Discovers The Laptops Have Cameras!

During our ICT & Digital Technologies session last week, Ms Woodhouse & Ric showed Prep W how to take photos using the laptop cameras.
We took some individual photos and group shots.
Then we navigated our way through the laptop hard drive to find the folder where they are stored, so we could look at them later!
We had fun taking photos of ourselves, whilst also talk discussing the importance of appropriate photos and privacy.
We love learning about how to use technology in our lives!

Our lovely preps have reached 100 Days of School! We enjoyed a special assembly on Friday celebrating all the learning and hard work they have been doing in their first 100 Days!
We started our assembly by singing some songs for everyone!
Then each student did a speech on what they have learnt and enjoyed in their first 100 days of school. Each student did such a fantastic job of speaking confidently! We are very proud!
Congratulations to all the preps on such a fantastic start to their school life!
SCIENCEWORKS! With Prep W & Prep G

All the Preps went on a fantastic excursion to SCIENCEWORKS!
As part of our ‘On The Move’ topic, we went along to further our understanding of:
- Forces, such as push and pull
- Gravity
- Materials
- Toys, and how they move.
We enjoyed a special presentation of ‘The Toys & Forces Show’, presented by a very funny education officer who works at Scienceworks.
We then explored the ‘Ground Up’ exhibition, followed by the playground (after eating our lunch). Then we visited ‘Sportsworks’ and ‘Think Ahead’ exhibits.
Here are some photos:
