3/4’s learning about solids, liquids and gases

Grade 3/4 had an interactive lesson learning all about the states of matter – solids, liquids and gases; and identifying properties of each. We had fun learning about Ooblek (goop) with an ooey-gooey ending from sticky to solid so students could see first hand and understand the states of matter involved in this experiment.

We looked at how how solids are packed tightly together and move slightly in place, liquids are close together but they can flow and move around and gases move around freely and quickly and bump and bounce off each other. We demonstrated this as a class pretending we were particles!

GRADE 3/4 CAMP 2018

GRADE 3/4 CAMP 2018

The 3/4’s embarked on a journey that brought a lifetime of memories. What a wonderful, challenging and enjoyable 3 days we had at Campaspe Downs! Emotions ran high leading into the camp, but as soon as we settled, the adventures began. Not only did the Year 4 students help, guide and mentor the Year 3’s to make them feel comfortable and at ease, but ALL of our happy campers overcame challenges they thought they would never dream of doing.

Starting with climbing up a 10 metre wall, then onto building rafts, heading up high in the sky on the giant swing and possum glider and the much anticipated flying fox – one of the highlights of the camp. The staff at Campaspe Downs are also to be commended on their energy, helpfulness and guidance during our 3 day adventures.

Our 3/4 students are still reliving memories in class with writing a recount of their favourite activities and adventures. What a great way to end the year!

3/4 Perimeter and Area

3/4 Perimeter and Area

This week during Maths, 3/4 have been learning about the perimeter (fence) and the area (field) of rectangles, squares and polygons. They worked in small groups and compared areas by measuring the area of rectangles (including squares) by counting the number of square centimetres. They also worked out perimeter with familiar objects around the classroom by exploring efficient ways of calculating the perimeters of rectangles such as adding the length and width together and doubling the result. Here are some pictures of them at play!

Volume, Capacity and Mass in 3/4

Volume, Capacity and Mass in 3/4

3/4 used unifix and MAB to become little architects to demonstrate and calculate the Volume (L x W x H) for appropriate buildings. They used their buildings and their objects to determine the volume by using the familiar metric units (cubic centimetres).

3/4 Measurement

MEASUREMENT – HEIGHT AND LENGTH

3/4 have been exploring measurement in maths and comparing their height to the width of a long jump to see if how far they can jump depends on their height. In groups, they used a tape measure, chalk and an an outside space to do long jump (no run off). First they measured each person’s height and recorded it under their name. Then each person jumped as far as they could from the line drawn with chalk and no run off. They then measured this distance and recorded it under their height to compare. See them in action below!
