Visual Arts

Visual Arts

Belle Vue Primary School students actively participate in creative art activities which develop and explore their imagination and knowledge. Through experimentation with a variety of art medium, students develop art concepts such as space, pattern, contrast and form.

Basic art elements of line, shape, colour, form and texture are explored using various media, tools and equipment and processes. Students explore a variety of modes of art such as drawing, painting, printing, collage, construction, weaving and modelling. Students are actively involved in creating new colours using primary colours, as well as creating tones and shades by adding black and white. Construction techniques are also improved by exploring a variety of joining techniques.

During art appreciation sessions, students examine the work of a variety of artists and gain confidence in making comments about the artists’ techniques and vision. From these conversations students are able to comment on their own work and the work of their peers with greater insight and suitable terminology. They are encouraged to describe sensory responses such as texture, mood, balance, colour, contrast and proportions.

The students’ work is presented at the whole school Art Show which is held in Term 3. All work is displayed for our school community to admire. This is a formal occasion where we encourage everyone to dress up and enjoy the glorious work of our talented students. Each class will complete a group piece of art work which will be auctioned and sold to the highest bidder. It is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our students’ achievements, and an evening that we all look forward to each year.

Physical Education

Physical Education

The Physical Education program for 2016 is based around Fundamental Motor skills, game play and development, teamwork and sportsmanship. Our sequential learning program aims to develop a love of physical activity, by allowing the students to gain confidence and skills that they can use to enjoy sports throughout their lives. We understand that all children contribute at different levels, and our lessons are aimed to meet the needs of each student, with a focus on participation and engagement.

All students participate in Physical Education sessions for 1 hour per week, and classroom teachers provide additional sports sessions throughout the term.

Students are encouraged to participate in non-competitive sports just for fun, but we also provide the opportunity for students to excel in interschool sports and beyond!

The major events include:

  • Cross Country day in Term 2
  • Athletics Carnival in Term 3
  • Swimming program and Swimming Carnival in Term 4.

Throughout the year there are many other fun activities such as Ride2School day and Jump Rope for Heart. The Running Club also meets twice a week to keep fit and train for various upcoming events within a social environment.

Additionally, students in Grade 5/6 have opportunities to develop and refine their skills with the opportunity to participate in Interschool Sports during Term 1 and 2. They compete with other schools in the Boroondara area in sports such as Cricket, Volleyball, Rounders, Bat Tennis and Softball.

Level 4

Level 4

In Years 5 and 6, students are seen as the leaders of the school. They are supported in becoming successful role models and independent learners. Students attend a leadership conference where they obtain skills and strategies to assist them in developing their leadership qualities. Our school leaders also have roles and responsibilities that help develop them into well-rounded individuals, by the time they are ready to move on to secondary school.

As well as the standard curriculum in classrooms, students at Belle Vue have opportunities to develop abilities and skills in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Students actively engage in Inter School Sport, Bike Education, School Camps, Extension Program, Music, Visual Arts, Physical Education and Multi Cultural Studies. The Year 6 students also take leading roles in our annual mid-year performance. All of these programs foster positive interactions, team building and an engaging curriculum for all students.

The Level 4 teachers work together to plan interesting and meaningful units of work, that are designed to promote inquiry learning. In 2014, our topics include Identity, Ancient Civilisations, Social Justice/Enterprise and Celebrations Around the World (via the World Cup).

Level 3

Level 3

At Level 3 we support students to manage the transition from junior to senior school. We foster independence and encourage teamwork. There is a continuing focus on the school’s values as well as the You Can Do It! program. Students’ autonomy increases as they develop individual working styles, take more responsibility for their learning and reflect upon what makes a successful learner.

We assess individual students in line with the AusVELS learning continuum to plan the next step of their learning journey. Based on student learning assessments, we deliver a differentiated program. This aims to cater for all students and covers a broad curriculum including Maths, English, Science and History.

Our Integrated Topics allow students to encounter new knowledge and skills in a meaningful and sequential manner. Subjects covered include the states of matter, animal science, Australian history and geography.

Level 3 students continue to take part in a range of specialist classes including weekly Art, L.O.T.E (Italian), Music, Library and P.E. Students also have the opportunity to be a part of Belle Vue’s extensive extra-curricular activities such as choir, dance club, running club and gardening club.

Level 1

Level 1

Welcome to your child’s first year at school.

Our Foundation class is located in the new BER building. Our teachers work closely together to provide a safe and stimulating environment in which your children can feel happy and secure.
The implementation of the You Can Do It! program across the curriculum ensures our students are able to develop into confident, persistent, resilient, organised and friendly lifelong learners.

The Foundation year is a busy one. Our students participate in Physical Education, LOTE – Italian, Library, Visual Arts and Music classes each week.
Foundation students also participate in a range of annual events across the school including our Mid-Year Concert, Cross Country, Multicultural Day and Swimming.
Our Foundation/Year 5 buddy program is also a highlight for our students and develops close bonds between our students, which for some children last many years after school.

Reading, writing, spelling and speaking & listening are based upon the Early Years Literacy program. Students participate in an uninterrupted 2-hour block each morning in order to develop the fundamental skills in the above areas. Reading with parents in the first 15 minutes of each day is a favourite activity for many Foundation students.

Mathematics has a very ‘hands-on’ approach in Foundation. We learn about space, chance & data, measurement and number through a variety of interactive activities and games in which we practice skills that we will use throughout life. Problem solving and understanding strategies are also practiced here.

Integrated Studies topics link our learning to the world around us. Our topics rotate through a 3-year cycle, incorporating Level 2 in our school. Our students learn through an investigative model where they can make observations and predictions, research, draw conclusions and develop a variety of higher order thinking skills. Our Integrated topics for 2014 are:

  • Me & My Community
  • Celebrations Around The World
  • Plants In Action
  • Toys In A Material World

Across all of these curriculum areas we regularly monitor and assess the progress of our students. We modify and alter our curriculum in order to ensure we are meeting the needs of each and every one of our students.

We look forward to working together with you to ensure that your child has the best possible start to their schooling at Belle Vue Primary School.

Level 2

Level 2

In Years 1 & 2 (VELS Level 2) we aim to provide students with a safe, happy and supportive learning environment in which they can reach their maximum potential.

The focus of our curriculum is to consolidate and build on the foundations of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills using various text types such as narrative, recount, procedural and persuasive, to name a few. The four features that are key to improving writing in the primary age range are Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation (V.C.O.P.). Throughout the school week, children developtheir writing and editing skills with a focus on V.C.O.P.

Students further develop their basic understanding of numerals and numbers systems. With emphasis on a hands on approach, areas covered in Numeracy at Level 2 are; Number, Space, Measurement, Chance and Data and Working Mathematically. Students work in pairs, co-operative groups and as a whole class to develop skills and understandings over many projects.

Computers and digital learning technologies are used daily to enhance learning and provide a different medium in which to learn at Level 2.

As part of the school camps program, students in level 2 are offered the opportunity to sleep over for one night at school in Term 4. This promotes their readiness for attending camp in further years.

The Integrated Units covered throughout Level 2 are:

  • Under the Sea
  • Minibeasts
  • My Family and Me
  • Fairytales
  • Olympics
  • Transport
  • Space
  • Dinosaurs

New Website

New Website

About this New Website

Our new website is the result of many hours of planning, programming, design and photographic work, but more importantly, the result of  years watching closely and evaluating the needs of our school community.
BVPS has, among other virtues, a special bond between families, students and staff.  A camaraderie that it is its signature, noticeable as soon as you walk in.
The new site was planned as the focal point for our students’ efforts and learning progress, a place to show off their work proudly and prominently.
Through the use of modern technologies, we hope to showcase the student ingenuity, curiosity and dedication. We will experiment with Video Channels, Audio Podcasts, Blogging, Comment Forms, Photography and Document Management.
These are just a few tools at our disposal now, but this site is designed to grow, it is compatible with all major browsers and uses Web Standards as much as possible.
This site will be monitored daily and your questions and comments will be answered promptly.
Please be patient if you see  “coming soon” messages, it is necessary to present the site skeleton like a container for our staff to begin filling and owning the many areas, so very shortly all these areas will be filled with fresh content.
So stay tuned!
